Tote-Ally Tuesday

It’s never too late to make a difference, right? Well, I’m challenging myself to going plastic bag free for the next year. I have made attempts in the past but always forgot to take my bags into the store…and the well-intentioned efforts stopped there.

Every Tuesday, I’ll provide a weekly update regarding my “plastic bag free” efforts as well any new tips or facts on Tote-Ally Tuesday.

Check out this documentary, Bag It The Movie. The trailer is attached.

I’ll leave you with a few facts until next Tuesday.

  • According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. (Estimated cost to retailers: $4 billion).
  • Only 1-3 percent of plastic bags are recycled.

  • It takes 1,000 years for polyethylene bags to break down.
  • Less than 5 percent of U.S. shoppers use canvas, cotton or mesh bags.

Have you already made the switch from plastic to Tote-Ally Tuesday? Do you have any tips?

I just started trying to use cloth bags too. Now that I leave them in the car all the time, it’s easier to remember to take them in the grocery store with me…. if I remember to look in the back seat when I get out of the car, that is! We recycle the plastic bags by using them when we clean out the litter box… they’re good poop bags! 🙂
